Snowboard Songwriter Darin Talbot Scores Big Air: "Tweeker Shred Master" In New Warren Miller Film

December 5, 2006 (Boulder, CO) - Darin Talbot's song "Tweeker Shred Master" has been selected for soundtrack usage in the new ski and snowboard film by Warren Miller titled "Off The Grid".

The upbeat ska version of the tune from Talbot's "BIG AIR" CD, is featured in a sequence titled Monopalooza, highlighting an amusing monoski festival.

"Tweeker Shred Master" has been recorded three times by Lake Tahoe troubadour Talbot, all versions are now available on iTunes (see below).

The song, about a kamikaze snowboarder born at Tahoe who lives only to ride, was a sure fit for the 57th Warren Miller release.

The "Off The Grid" tour crisscrosses the country from October to December 2006 as a limited release with 400-plus screenings in more than 180 cities in 35 states.

Look for Talbot to tour western region ski and snow resort towns throughout the winter of 2006/2007.

MUSIC CONNECTION CLUB REVIEW
Darin Talbot at Genghis Cohen, Hollywood
by Bernard Baur

Darin Talbot: Talented singer/songwriter with retro-folk-rock flair.

MATERIAL: Darin Talbot came down the mountain to entertain flatlanders. At home, 6,225 feet above sea level, he's affectionately called "Tahoe's Jimmy Buffett". But that description isn't really accurate. Except for a couple of amusing tunes, Talbot is much closer to Jim Croce and Harry Chapin, because there's more to this artist than light hearted fare. His peers today however, would be John Mayer and Jack Johnson, and Talbot might want to take a page from their songbooks. Though his songs evoke intriguing stories, they lack the choruses and hooks those two contemporaries specialize in. Consequently, Talbot may be limiting his appeal; and with his talent, that would be a shame.

MUSICIANSHIP: With complete control of both his voice and guitar, Talbot is almost too polished. Perfection may be a fine goal, but it also tends to soften the edges. One couldn't help but feel that there is more below the surface than Talbot shows. It comes out in his lyrics, but rarely in his vocals, which often understate a song's emotional content. Even so, Talbot's professionalism pulls it off well enough to keep his audience interested.

PERFORMANCE: Soothing and entertaining, Talbot came across personable, accessible, and sweet. An engaging artist, he connected with the room, but it would have helped if he got off of his stool now and then. Indeed some of his songs would have had much greater impact if he stood up and moved around.

SUMMARY: This is a very talented singer-songwriter, but his influences may be too ancient for today's market. Croce, Chapin, and even Denver were wonderful artists in their day. And although being retro isn't a bad thing, Talbot simply has to avoid sounding dated. At times, he comes awfully close to that fine line. And it would seem that an artist of his depth could forge his own identity, just as his heroes did 30 years ago.

LAKE TAHOE TROUBADOUR LANDS NATIONAL AIRPLAY

LOS ANGELES, CA. (June 1, 2005) - Lake Tahoe Troubadour DARIN TALBOT will have his sensationally funny song "OH MY!" air nationally on the Dr. Demento Radio Show on June 11th and 12th.

Upbeat and humorous, Talbot's "OH MY!" is a zany, non-PC folk-rap about a woman's right to sexual satisfaction which the Good Dr. has deemed 'hilarious' and worthy of national broadcast. For more radio show info visit www.drdemento.com

"OH MY!" makes it's national radio debut just as Darin Talbot brings his unique brand of contemporary acoustic pop songs to the Los Angeles and Palm Springs areas for the very first time.

Voted *Lake Tahoe Best Local Musician* for two consecutive years, Darin Talbot has opened for The Beach Boys, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, and for Harry Chapin's daughter, Jen Chapin.

Often compared to John Denver and Jim Croce, Talbot has been described by regional media as 'Tahoe's Jimmy Buffett' due to the festive feel of his upbeat songs and entertaining live shows.

Darin Talbot's first three CD releases on Air Tahoe Records have had national airplay on Radio Disney, The All Star Radio Network, Sirius, and XM Satellite Radio. Earlier this year, 3 of his songs debuted simultaneously on the Top 10 at W-FM Radio Australia.

Story from: ABERDEEN, SOUTH DAKOTA

ABOUT DARIN TALBOT Darin Talbot is one of those rare people who knows exactly what he wants: snowboarding, singing his songs, and sharing it all with the people he cares about.

There is a thing in the music business that is peculiar to new artists, and it can be frustrating: in order to break into the business they need to offer something unique and new, but the market wants to know who the artists are "like". Rockers like Aerosmith? Folk-flavored like John Mayer? Party music a la Jimmy Buffet? Country "hat act"? What if that artist really is unique, with his own sound, his own style, his own lyrical voice, his own irrepressible personality? That´s Darin Talbot.

Ok. If I had to pick a sound-alike, I´d pick Jim Croce, but their songs aren´t alike, so that´s as far as I´ll go. This snowboarder from Lake Tahoe – a fine guitar player, and a writer who shares his heart and soul in his songs – has a voice that turns from powerhouse to sweet, and flips from rich baritone to perfect falsetto with so little effort it´s almost scary. Where´d he learn to sing like that, huh?

Don´t try to pin his songs down either. I´d say he´s telling the guy´s story (Without the Words) sometimes, but some songs are about Everyperson. whether it´s deep love (The Day) or deeper despair (Will). There´s no formulaic blues head or standard song form holding these tunes back. Each one works on it´s own, weaving extended metaphor and fresh new melodies.

His infectious personality, wacky wit, and genuine warmth make him a pretty irresistible performer. It doesn´t hurt that he´s obviously energized by an audience, too. He´s havin´ fun up there, man! Yeah. That´s the way it´s supposed to be.

TALBOT, SHREDMASTER SCORE BIG WITH BIG AIR
by Kiply Travis

Who would have thought that the words to Darin Talbot's 'Snow Day' would still apply well into March?
'Snow Day' is just one of the great tracks on Talbot's latest CD, BIG AIR. It also includes the now-classic 'Tweeker Shred Master,' plus the title track and eight other songs that celebrate Tahoe (Well, seven others that are about Tahoe, and one that is about a dog named Einstein...)
The local chambers of commerce should send Darin Talbot on a tour to promote BIG AIR, because he makes Tahoe sound like paradise on earth, and not just for the snowsports; he extols the pleasures of the lake's summertime beaches.

With his latest disc, Talbot is bringing his studio band on the road to back up his vocals and guitar, with the appropriate name of SHREDMASTER. For the past year and a half or so, Talbot has been somewhat of a resident musician for the Tahoe Biltmore and the Crystal Bay Club on the North Shore, and he's been a regular at Freddie's Roost in Sparks. In November, Darin and the band played their first BIG AIR BASH at the Tahoe Biltmore, with more than 300 fans in attendance. They've got another BIG AIR BASH lined up for April in Reno.

There's also been coverage in SKI PRESS USA, interviews on a whole slew of radio stations, and a performance at the launch of United Airlines carrier TED.

Darin Talbot is always getting compared to Jimmy Buffett, and yeah, some of his stuff does have a beach-bum flavor. But it might be more appropriate to list him alongside country music's Chris LeDoux, who played Carson City last year. LeDoux is a true singin' cowboy; a rodeo champion, he spent the early years of his music career selling cassette tapes out of his trunk on the rodeo circuit. His songs center on the life of a rodeo cowboy, with a good selection of both ballads and barnburners.

Likewise, Talbot captures the feel and the spirit of high Tahoe livin', with a mix of ballads about boarder girls and the catchy toe-tappin Tweeker Shred Master (I defy anyone to not move to the beat of this song!). Talbot has yet to bring the new band on down to the South Shore, but his manager (who brought the artist BECK to fame) promises me that they are looking to debut the band in South Lake.

You can catch all the info and background on Darin at his recently revamped Web site www.laketahoemusic.net, and his discs are also available for purchase online.Through the rest of the month, he bounces back and forth from the North Shore to Reno, leading up to an April 24th BIG AIR BASH #2 CD release party, with SHREDMASTER and MAX VOLUME at Great Basin Brewing in Reno. ($5 cover) The show kicks off at 9:30.

DARIN TALBOT READY TO LAND THE BIG ONE
Tahoe snowboarding songwriter's third CD now out
by Jason Kellner

Like the fresh powder the snowboarding songwriter sings about, Darin Talbot is hoping for a storm that will blow him beyond the local recognition he enjoys around Lake Tahoe. Whatever happens, he says, he´s not going to melt away.

Talbot just released his third album of songs about the life of a lake-loving songwriter, "Big Air," on his own Air Tahoe label. The CD has been serviced to more than 200 radio stations nationwide. He´s been called the Jimmy Buffett of Tahoe, the Tahoe Troubadour and, perhaps as a tool to catch some younger eyes, mentioned in the company of Jack Johnson and surfing.

Although Talbot bears some resemblance to those musicians, the most common thing is a geographical connection. Talbot is known as the Tahoe guy. All he needs now is a break that will put the Talbot-Tahoe connection on the map.

With one foot strapped onto his snowboard at the top of Diamond Peak, Talbot looks to the deep blue of Lake Tahoe and insists he´s found his niche.

"I can be the guy who sings about Tahoe, but it would be nice to have one of those songs be nationally known," Talbot said. "I look at Tahoe, and I think, ´What´s not to get?´ If you don´t get that," he said pointing at the lake on a bluebird day, "you´re nuts."

With three Tahoe-inspired albums on the shelves, Talbot admits he doesn´t have to be all Tahoe. He´s written his fourth album and says it has nothing to do with snowboarding.

"Jason Mraz, John Mayer, the new singer-songwriters are singing about universal things," Talbot said. "If I can make it with one song, the positive repercussions from doing all the Tahoe stuff will be gigantic. It´s a matter of staying the course."

And with the help of an inspiring manager (who launched the career of Beck pushing the song "Loser" to college radio via the tiny Bong Load label), Talbot is sticking to his music. In the late 1990s, Talbot was juggling a day job approving loans at Wells Fargo and writing original music. It was suggested he resign when it was apparent his heart was in music, not money.

Talbot gathered steam as a solo artist, playing at Hugh Hefner´s house, opening for the Beach Boys and playing several gigs a week around Lake Tahoe. Last year while recording "Big Air," he asked his studio band to join him for live shows and dubbed the band Shredmaster, named after one of his first songs, "Tweeker Shred Master."

"I can draw larger crowds with the band," Talbot said. "I have fans who like the solo thing and fans who like the band. I´m grateful I can do everything and have the life I have. I live in the coolest place and have the coolest job. I´d just like to hear my songs on the radio."

While he´s working on that, he supplements his live gigs giving private guitar lessons.

"It´s not like I couldn´t do what I´m doing giving guitar lessons and not be pretty happy," he said. "I´m going to keep making albums. I´ll never stop trying and believing I can make it."

His style is mellower than what´s normally associated with snowboarding, and it sometimes draws detractors, like mixing oil and water. But Talbot´s pioneering a style.

"I´m saying snowboard music can be mainstream pop music, and they´re saying ´No, it´s punk rock.´ Those people (sometimes) look at me like I´m crazy. There´s gonna be a time when it´s right. I know guys from the early ´80s who skated with (Stacy) Peralta and Tony Hawk back in the swimming-pool days. They listened to all kinds of stuff, but they´re 40 now and they´ve mellowed out."

He´s onto something. After all, it took at least 15 years before most of the American ski areas finally warmed up to snowboards.

"I believe it´ll happen," Talbot said. "I just don´t know when. If I die and I have 10 CDs out, then hey, I put 10 CDs in the world. That´s something to be proud of. I´m trying to get comfortable with what happens if it doesn´t happen. It certainly won´t be banking."

The next local show Talbot plays is Feb. 28 at Freddie´s Roost at Red Hawk Golf Club in Sparks from 6-9 p.m. He plays a mix of solo and full-band shows twice a week at various Tahoe-Truckee venues. Find the schedule at www.airtahoerecords.com.

TALBOT'S SHREDMASTER
'Sno Starz' February 2004
-by Lori Knowles

"They call it extreme sport folk-rock, and it´s being pioneered — where else?
— in California. Darin Talbot, a snowboarding singer-songwriter, is just
releasing his third extreme sport folk-rock CD, named — what else? — BigAir, on his own label, Air Tahoe Records. Tracks include Big Air and, of course, Ski Bum. Talbot is now performing the new music live with his band Shredmaster throughout northern Nevada and California.
And in case you were wondering, the man they call the Tahoe Troubadour and Tahoe´s Jimmy Buffett is no one-hit wonder. His Tweeker Shred Master won big at a 2000 online music festival, and he was subsequently invited to play their extreme folk-rock at the Playboy Mansion. Like that other extreme — well, extremely something, we´re not sure what — rocker Rod Stewart used to say: "Some guys have all the luck…"

This national press debut out soon in the February 2004 issue of SKI PRESS MAGAZINE with distribution of 625,000 and available at every ski resort in North America.

DARIN TALBOT
Show Preview 11/13/2003
by Jason Kellner

Just in time for winter, Tahoe Troubadour Darin Talbot´s third CD "Big Air" is now out on his own Air Tahoe Records label. The folkish singer-songwriter´s new disc has 11 tracks filled with stories of deep powder and life at The Lake, including an amped-up remake of "Tweeker Shred Master," a song from a previous album that´s been heard on the Dr. Demento radio show. Previously, you´d find Talbot strumming his songs solo, but now he´s got Shredmaster, his new three-piece band, behind him. Talbot and Shredmaster play live at 7 tonight at the Tahoe Biltmore in Crystal Bay with openers Max Volume and Jellohat.

RENO GAZETTE JOURNAL CD Review
Darin Talbot "Big Air" Air Tahoe Records

Singer-songwriter Darin Talbot knows how lucky he is to live at Lake Tahoe. And he can´t stop writing songs about it. His third album "Big Air," is his first with a new backing band, but third with the Tahoe theme. His original songs have been described as similar to James Taylor, Jimmy Buffett and, most recently, Jack Johnson, but the former seem to apply here more than the latter. The album opens with a remake of his own "Tweeker Shred Master," amped up into a ska version. The other acoustic-based songs include more stories of life at the Lake, snowboarding, and the dogs and girls that live there around him. A standout track here, "Boarder Girl," bears a striking resemblance to Beck´s "Jackass."

Tahoe Troubadour Secures Extended Engagement at Lake Tahoe Hotel & Casino

LAKE TAHOE, NV (April 23, 2003) - Snowboard singer-songwriter DARIN TALBOT has booked a summer residency at the Tahoe Biltmore Hotel & Casino on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. Talbot's exclusive engagement begins the 2nd week in May and will run through October, with appearances every Thursday Friday and Saturday night.

Last week on radio station KRLT, Talbot debuted a new song from his forthcoming 3rd CD titled "BIG AIR". The song called "Old Friend", was debuted on Larry Kay's Morning Show on 93.9fm, along with his classic hit tune, "Tweeker Shred Master".

Earlier this month, Talbot was featured in the Reno News & Review's music review section in a story called 'TAHOE DREAMIN'. To see the story online, please visit:

TAHOE DREAMIN'
Singer-songwriter Darin Talbot makes happy songs about love, life and snow
By Carli Cutchin

Don't ask Darin Talbot to choose between his snowboard and his guitar.

Darin Talbot believes that angst and misery shouldn't rule rock 'n' roll. His musical career, in fact, saw its birth at the standup comedy open mic. He traces his music back to a dream he had in the early '90s, at a time when he was living in Tahoe and performing comedy at coffeehouses.

"I'd been having these kinds of dreams of literally running from something," Talbot says. "It literally made me fall down--like, 'What in the world is this?' "

It turned out to be the inspiration for a tune Talbot called "Scary Man." Talbot, who hadn't learned to play a musical instrument, kept the melody and lyrics for "Scary Man" in his head. That song kicked off an inner concert--about 30 songs came to Talbot within a week's time. Talbot figured he'd better learn to play guitar.

"From the point I got my first guitar, I was obsessed."

The 30-something's languid, folk-tinged pop about love and snow sports has earned him the tag "Tahoe's Troubadour." "Tweeker Shred Master," a song from his first album, Music Flight, reads like Willie Nelson's "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" recast as a wayward snowboarder's tale: "At eighteen years he packed his cares in a bag filled with snowboard gear/Told his mama oh please don't cry I'll be back by the end of the year/His mama looked with them droopy eyes and asked old Tweeker why must you go/And Tweeker looked with the sweetest smile and said mama there's Utah snow." Talbot's upbeat voice even hints at a lilting country twang.

"I'm sort of Tahoe's singer guy," Talbot admits. In fact, his third album, Snow Day, due out next month on his label, Air Tahoe Records (www.airtahoerecords.com), is "the ultimate snow album," with snow-related sounds tucked between songs. There's the sound of snow boots stomping through fresh snow and the "dunt dunt dunt" of a chair lift. Talbot concedes that being "the Tahoe singer" could narrow his geographical appeal, but he stresses that his albums speak to nature lovers in various locales. He brings up Jimmy Buffett, one of his favorite musicians.

"He's not necessarily talking about Key West. He's talking about beaches and cocktails. Snowboards and snow--it's really about the sports, it's really about the lifestyle, it's really about snow."

Talbot says his albums are also about making people happy, about making good music without "having this huge band with a devil image," though he adds that he "admires all music."

"I've always been this guy who was full of ideas," Talbot says. "I feel like I have been given this God-given gift."

Talbot says he's a bad verbal communicator, but it's easy for him to express emotions through music. Playing live, Talbot is anything but stolid--whether playing one of his originals or a Cat Stevens cover, Talbot seems completely enveloped by song.

At Rapscallion Roadhouse Grill, at a Wednesday night performance, Talbot gives a heartfelt, stripped-down performance from his stool. But when it's time to talk one-on-one, Talbot shifts gears and takes on the youthful enthusiasm of a boarder. In fact, with his close-cropped blonde locks and boyish good looks, Talbot almost looks like a teenager, like someone who's stoked about whatever life has in store for him.

"I'm one of those people who believe in destiny," he says. "Things will work out how they're supposed to be."
